Merrick became a naturalized citizen of the US in 1943. In 1949, the Merricks moved to Ridgefield. Merrick became interested in Ridgefield community associations, first as president of the Women's Republican Club, then as president of the Ridgefield Thrift Shop and for five years as president of the District Nursing Association. |

Merrick's first position was secretary to the Assistant Treasurer of the Federal Land Bank. Supervisor of the Women's Land Army and Victory Farm Volunteers at the University of CT during WWII. Women and teenage boys were trained to serve on farms desperately in need of help, due to the drafting of farmers. After the war, Merrick moved to NYC and became estate accountant and social secretary to Mrs. William Pearson Hamilton, the daughter of J.P. Morgan. Merrick was interested in Ridgefield community associations, first as president of the Women's Republican Club, then as president of the Ridgefield Thrift Shop and for five years as president of the District Nursing Association. Merrick was well-known for the breeding and obedience training of Dalmations. She was a member of the Dalmation Club of America. Merrick was a member of the Board of the District Nursing Association, and a member of the Ridgefield Garden Club, and the Silver Spring Country Club. |
Publications |
"Barnum and his Friends", described by Merrick as her memoirs of her different pets, which included a story of when her dog, Budge, met and then nipped Eleanor Roosevelt. Published in 2004. |
