Ridgefield Press Old Ridgefield photos & columns for the year 2004 (no Old Ridgefield columns for missing dates) 1/2 -- mail carrier Don Gay, posing in the rain on Bailey Avenue in 1962, while delivering mail on what, at the time, was City Route 9 1/9 -- ca. 1980 photo of two very youthful looking gentlemen, William (Bill or Billy) Craig and John Frey, on an unknown occasion; see 3/17 for another youthful shot of Mr. Frey 1/15 -- the two-building Scott Block (see 4/15, below) after a February, 1934 blizzard; occupants at the time, south to north, were the post office, a liquor store, a paint and auto parts store, the First National grocery chain store and, on the corner, the Lorna Doone restaurant 1/22 -- [no picture] 1/29 -- [no picture] 2/5 -- Joe Brunetti at the scale in his market on Main Street; the previous occupant of that location was the A&P, where Mr. Brunetti worked as a butcher. The store occupied the south half of the former Bissell building ground floor, and would be where Bissell House currently (2010) is located in the rebuilt version 2/12 -- 1935 high school basketball team, with many IDs provided by former resident and RHS '35 grad Lou Shornick 2/19 -- postcard view of a residence identified only as "Comfort Lodge"; location unknown, no date given 2/26 -- [no picture] 3/4 -- 'then and now' views of Lynce (Olinto) Carboni, sipping a little wine at Jim Barbarie's on the occasion of his 95th birthday, and as "Battling Bones" the well-known boxer, in 1927 3/11 -- St.. The gazebo somehow managed to survive the demolition of the estate itself by IBM. 7/22 -- the Branchville post office early in the 20th century; the very small building stood across the river from the train station and was accessed by bridge; apparently, a visitor had to cross the station siding to get there. Postmistress Edna Darragh is shown standing in the doorway. 8/19 -- front view of the former Ballard estate that once stood on the site of Ballard Park, n. d. 9/16 -- 1959-60 runners-up team in the Townies intramural basketball competition; all identified 9/23 -- very early (circa 1890) photo of the Methodist church and parsonage at Main and Catoonah, with almost no other buildings in view 9/30 -- [no picture] 10/7 -- Rudolph and Amalia Marconi with children Nazzareno and Annie in a circa 1924 Hartmann photo; Nazzareno would be Nano, Rudy Marconi's father 10/14 -- [no Old Ridgefield picture] Old RHS photo features John Ancona 10/21 -- Rudy Marconi when a member of the high school baseball been, showing his at-bat stance 10/28 -- unidentified couple in an old Hartmann photo 11/4 -- Lou Fossi with his mother Ida, on the occasion of winning his first contest (against Mike Hagan) for first selectman in 1973; Stanley Piasta is shown offering congratulations.
